Atari and renowned indie developer Fabraz have officially unveiled Bubsy 4D, introducing a bold new entry in the long-running Bubsy franchise.
Bubsy 4D is set to launch on major platforms, including Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PC, and additional consoles, and marks the bobcat mascot’s first fully 3D adventure since the critically panned Bubsy 3D.
While the exact release date has not been disclosed, the announcement has generated significant excitement among fans eager to see one of gaming’s most talked-about characters return.
Bubsy 4D offers an intergalactic, craft-themed platforming experience, expanding the franchise’s traditional two-dimensional gameplay into a modern 3D presentation.
Players will control Bubsy as he navigates a series of vibrant alien worlds, battling familiar adversaries and collecting copious amounts of yarn.
This new installment sees the return of the iconic villainous Woolies, who have once again created chaos—this time by equipping their robotic BaaBots with advanced technology and setting them on a collision course with Bubsy’s quest to reclaim the legendary Golden Fleece.
Fabraz, known for its innovative approach to platforming, has reimagined Bubsy’s moveset to accommodate both newcomers and seasoned platforming veterans.
According to Fabraz’s announcement, Bubsy’s upgraded abilities include running, jumping, gliding, scaling walls with claws, and a new hairball form that allows for high-speed rolling and bouncing.
The game's design encourages exploration of expansive, craft-inspired worlds, each featuring unique challenges and BaaBot boss battles.
Dedicated to accessibility and replayability, Bubsy 4D supports both casual and competitive play.
Players can spend collected yarn to acquire new outfits or seek out hidden blueprints in each level to unlock additional moves and upgrades.
For those seeking an extra challenge, every stage offers a time trial mode with the opportunity to upload best times to global online leaderboards, fostering a strong sense of community and competition.
A spokesperson from Atari expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating that the collaboration with Fabraz aims to rejuvenate Bubsy for both longtime fans and a new generation of players.
The expressive new moveset and inventive level design are intended to make Bubsy 4D stand out in the crowded 3D platformer genre, blending nostalgic elements with modern gameplay enhancements.
Adding further appeal, Bubsy 4D features a lively, multifaceted soundtrack composed by Fat Bard, weaving in genres ranging from jazz and big band to electro-swing.
Longtime fans will also be pleased to encounter returning characters such as Terri, Terry, Virgil, and Oblivia, all interacting with Bubsy throughout his spacefaring adventure.
Bubsy 4D will be available for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PC, and other consoles.
More details, including an official release date and eShop availability, are expected to be announced in the coming months via future Nintendo Direct presentations and updates from Atari.
For now, fans can look forward to a fresh chapter in Bubsy’s storied, if notorious, history.
