Nintendo and Illumination have officially expanded the star-studded voice cast for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, as revealed during today’s highly anticipated Nintendo Direct.
This upcoming animated feature continues the studio partnership that brought the beloved Mario universe to cinemas, and is set to premiere in theaters worldwide on April 3, 2026.
Fan excitement soared as Nintendo announced that Academy Award-winning actress Brie Larson will take on the role of Rosalina, the cosmic protector celebrated by fans of the Super Mario Galaxy series on Nintendo platforms.
Alongside her, acclaimed filmmaker and actor Benny Safdie has been cast as Bowser Jr., the mischievous and ambitious villain with eyes on galactic conquest.
Their involvement was confirmed during the Nintendo Direct livestream, in which Nintendo and Illumination explained the decision to further enrich the universe of the Mario movies by introducing new characters central to the Super Mario Galaxy storyline.
"We are thrilled to welcome Brie Larson and Benny Safdie to the Super Mario Galaxy Movie," said representatives from the production, underlining the commitment to authentic character portrayals and elevating the cinematic experience for fans old and new.
Larson and Safdie will join a returning ensemble that includes Chris Pratt reprising his role as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson voicing Kamek.
The original cast’s return ensures continuity that has already been embraced by audiences following the resounding success of the first movie, which achieved impressive box office milestones and introduced Nintendo's iconic franchise to a broader global audience.
Developed by Illumination—the studio behind the Despicable Me and Minions franchises—the Super Mario Galaxy Movie is poised to build on the legacy of its predecessor.
Leveraging state-of-the-art animation techniques and a deep respect for the source material from Nintendo, the film is set to explore new galactic settings inspired by the best-selling Nintendo titles, while inviting viewers into an expanded universe filled with nostalgia and innovation.
With global anticipation mounting, and a confirmed release date set for April 3, 2026, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie looks primed to further cement Nintendo's stature in animated film, aligning with ongoing efforts to grow its properties beyond video games.
