Description

2K and Gearbox Software Confirm Indefinite Delay of Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 Long-anticipated by both franchise fans and Nintendo enthusiasts, Borderlands 4 was originally set for launch on Nintendo Switch 2.

However, publisher 2K and developer Gearbox Software have now officially announced an indefinite delay for the title’s release on Nintendo’s next-generation hardware.

This decision impacts both retail and digital editions, shifting expectations for a title that was poised to be a major addition to the Switch 2 lineup. In a statement distributed across official social media channels, 2K and Gearbox emphasized that postponing Borderlands 4 was not a choice made lightly.

The developers clarified that the delay is essential to “deliver the best possible experience” to players, with the game requiring further development and polish time.

Moreover, the studios are working toward integrating cross-save functionality, recognized as a highly requested feature by the community.

"Our goal is to align the new release window with the addition of cross saves, which is in active development and widely regarded as important by our fans," the publisher explained. Pre-order logistics are also evolving due to the uncertainty around the revised release window.

As per Nintendo’s policy, all digital pre-orders made through the Nintendo eShop will be canceled.

Customers may initiate this process manually or will be automatically refunded starting Friday, September 26.

The publishers advise contacting Nintendo Support for any questions regarding digital transactions.

Those who placed physical pre-orders are encouraged to reach out directly to their respective retailers for further assistance. “We’re grateful for the unwavering support, participation, and patience from our community,” the statement continued.

Gearbox and 2K encouraged fans to stay tuned for further updates as the new timeline for Borderlands 4 is finalized. Set on the hazardous planet Kairos, Borderlands 4 introduces players to a fresh cast of four Vault Hunters.

Their mission is to overthrow the tyrannical Timekeeper, whose authoritarian grip on the planet becomes threatened by a catastrophic event that sparks rebellion.

True to the franchise’s DNA, gameplay will include frenetic free-form combat, exploration, varied loot drops, challenging boss fights, and a mix of new and returning characters.

Both single-player and cooperative multiplayer modes (up to four players) will be available, ensuring fans have multiple ways to dive in once the game hits the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop and retail stores worldwide. Borderlands 4, developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K, remains in active development for the Nintendo Switch 2, alongside other platforms.

The new launch date will be communicated once additional planning is completed.

For ongoing updates, fans are encouraged to follow official channels and Gearbox's community forums.
