Bloober Team’s upcoming Project M, announced as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, has renewed industry interest in how next-generation Nintendo hardware could influence horror game design.

The Polish developer, best known for atmospheric titles such as Layers of Fear, Observer, Blair Witch and The Medium, is positioning Project M as an opportunity to explore platform-driven design rather than simply chasing raw technical performance.

Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno recently discussed the studio’s goals for Project M, framing the effort as a creative challenge: to build a game that feels distinctly “Nintendo” while remaining dark and firmly rooted in horror.

Babieno said the team is asking how Nintendo Switch 2’s form factor and features might enable experiences that other platforms — PC, PlayStation or Xbox — would not replicate in the same way.

He emphasized aspects beyond graphics, naming immersion, tension, player behavior, portability, unique console features and controller design as potential levers for creating atmosphere.

In his remarks, Babieno explained that the studio is exploring how platform characteristics can shape experience design.

He noted that Nintendo platforms historically inspire unconventional design decisions, and that this constraint can produce fresh approaches to gameplay and atmosphere.

Babieno made clear the intent is not to dilute horror into something more casual; instead, Bloober Team aims to use Nintendo Switch 2’s capabilities to craft a dark, disturbing and fully horror-driven experience that leverages features unique to the platform.

Project M follows Bloober Team’s track record of narrative-driven horror.

The Medium released in 2021 and garnered attention for its dual-reality mechanics and psychological storytelling; Observer and Layers of Fear cemented the studio’s reputation for mood and technical experimentation in earlier years.

Those prior projects give Bloober Team a demonstrable foundation in marrying mechanics with atmosphere, a background Babieno referenced when discussing new design possibilities on Nintendo Switch 2.

Bloober Team has not announced a release date for Project M, and details on gameplay remain limited.

Fans and industry watchers will likely look to major events such as Nintendo Direct presentations and eShop announcements for formal updates.

For now, Bloober’s public commentary frames Project M as both a technical and design experiment: an attempt to use the Switch 2’s distinct identity to deliver horror in a way the studio argues other platforms might struggle to duplicate.
