Monster Hunter Rise Introduces New Monsters Bishaten and Somnacanth on Nintendo Switch

Capcom has officially revealed two entirely new monsters—Bishaten and Somnacanth—that will make their first appearance in Monster Hunter Rise, the highly anticipated addition to the Monster Hunter franchise releasing exclusively for Nintendo Switch.

This action role-playing game, developed by Capcom, continues the legacy of innovation seen throughout the series and offers an array of new gameplay features and creative monster designs that will engage both long-time fans and newcomers alike. Bishaten stands out with its unique tail and notable penchant for persimmons, which it cleverly stores in its belly to launch at unsuspecting prey.

According to Capcom, Bishaten employs a variety of tail-based attacks as well as formidable spinning maneuvers, presenting a fresh challenge for hunters who will need to study its moves carefully to avoid dangerous encounters. Meanwhile, Somnacanth is described as a mesmerizing aquatic leviathan.

This new monster possesses the ability to emit a powerful sleep-inducing powder, temporarily immobilizing hunters to leave them exposed to further attacks.

The strategic use of sleep powder introduces a significant tactical element to hunts involving Somnacanth, adding to the complexity and excitement of the gameplay experience. Set in the vibrant Kamura Village—a hub that draws visitors with its unique culture and advanced hunting technology—Monster Hunter Rise invites players to embark on a grand adventure across all-new hunting grounds.

Notably, the game's updated map system allows for uninterrupted exploration; loading times between areas have been eliminated, so hunts now feature seamless transitions and continuous gameplay. Among the most notable gameplay innovations is the introduction of wire-based grappling actions using the Wirebug.

Whether on the ground or in mid-air, hunters can employ the Wirebug to gain new tactical advantages, enhance mobility, and perform dynamic aerial maneuvers—providing new strategies for both traversal and combat. Hunters will also face Magnamalo, the game's new flagship monster, which Capcom characterizes as a formidable adversary for players of all skill levels.

Complementing the roster are additional newcomers such as the shape-shifting Aknosom and the amphibious Tetranadon, along with a number of returning species from previous Monster Hunter games, further enriching the bestiary. For cooperative play, Monster Hunter Rise introduces Palamutes—customizable, rideable canine companions that will support hunters with new attack options and modes of transportation.

The much-loved Felyne Palicoes also return to provide healing and support skills, and solo players can benefit from the aid of both a Palamute and a Palico during hunts. Monster Hunter Rise is set for a worldwide release exclusively on Nintendo Switch on March 26, 2021.

The title will be available both in physical form and digitally through the Nintendo eShop, ensuring accessibility for a broad audience.

With record sales across the franchise and a wealth of gameplay innovations, Capcom's latest entry is poised to further solidify Monster Hunter as a pillar of cooperative action RPGs on Switch.
