Beyond Good & Evil 2 Survives Ubisoft Game Cancellations Amid Studio Restructuring

Ubisoft, one of the foremost publishers in the global video game industry, recently made headlines following an announcement of studio closures, layoffs, and the cancellation of six in-development titles, including the highly anticipated Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake. The past year has been marked by significant organizational shifts for Ubisoft as it strives to streamline operations amid a rapidly changing game development landscape. However, in a notable development, the long-awaited action-adventure game Beyond Good & Evil 2 has emerged largely unaffected by these broader cuts. Revealed initially in May 2008, Beyond Good & Evil 2 has become synonymous with prolonged development cycles. After resurfacing in 2017 with new concepts and direction, the title has faced multiple production hurdles, leading to frequent delays. Despite these challenges, Insider Gaming has reported—citing people familiar with the matter—that the game continues its development journey. Sources indicate that the ongoing changes, postponements, and the extensive development timeline have led the project to incur costs reportedly exceeding $500 million. This remarkable budget places Beyond Good & Evil 2 among the most expensive projects in Ubisoft’s history, reflecting not only the ambition behind the title but also the evolving nature of AAA game development. While six other games were canceled in the latest round of company restructuring, Ubisoft appears committed to seeing Beyond Good & Evil 2 through to completion. The project’s continued survival amidst cuts is notable in an industry where unfinished titles often meet an abrupt end when facing financial and strategic headwinds. Ubisoft’s most recent wave of staff reductions and studio shutdowns underscores the pressures many large publishers face in the contemporary market. The cancellation list included notable properties and franchises, underlining the company’s need to refocus resources. Yet Beyond Good & Evil 2, despite its extensive history of challenges, seems positioned as a priority for Ubisoft, possibly due to the significant investment already made and the strong legacy of the franchise. Gamers anticipating Beyond Good & Evil 2 can continue to hope for eventual release across major hardware platforms, such as PlayStation, Xbox, and potentially Nintendo Switch in the future. The game’s development, closely watched by both industry professionals and fans, stands as a testament to Ubisoft’s willingness to support ambitious titles even through adversity. As further updates emerge, the gaming community remains eager to see if Beyond Good & Evil 2 can fulfill its promise and justify its landmark investment.
