The Settlers II, Ubisoft Blue Byte’s iconic city-building game, is set to make a historic comeback on Amiga computers this October—nearly three decades after its original debut on other platforms.
The highly anticipated Gold Edition, developed by Look Behind You with the support of Ubisoft, marks the first time Amiga fans will officially experience the sequel on the hardware that birthed the franchise.
Originally released in 1996 for MS-DOS, The Settlers II was the follow-up to the pioneering 1993 title, The Settlers, which made significant waves upon its Amiga launch.
While the original became an instant classic and established Blue Byte Software’s legacy, the decline of the Amiga market in the mid-1990s led the developer to focus on the more dominant PC platforms for the sequel.
This move left a gap for dedicated Amiga enthusiasts who have long awaited an official release.
Now, almost 29 years after The Settlers II first captivated PC gamers, Look Behind You—a German retro game publisher—has struck a deal with Ubisoft to bring a version specifically optimized for Amiga hardware.
The Settlers II: Gold Edition is scheduled for release on October 18, 2025, and promises to do more than simply port over the original code.
The development team describes the project as a “lovingly optimized version that shows what the Amiga is really capable of,” leveraging modern technical insights to push the classic system.
For optimal gameplay, the new release requires an Amiga with an AGA chipset and a 68040 processor running at 40 MHz.
The developers also recommend an additional graphics card to enhance the experience, and support extends to PowerPC Amigas running AmigaOS 4.1 or AmigaOS 3.1 with WarpUP, ensuring compatibility across several hardware generations.
Steffen Häuser, the project’s lead developer, summarized the vision behind the project in a media statement, explaining that the aim was not only to demonstrate that porting The Settlers II to the Amiga could be done, but to faithfully deliver the gaming experience Amiga players deserved back in 1996.
Kay Bennemann, senior business developer at Ubisoft Blue Byte, reinforced the importance of this release, noting that The Settlers franchise was foundational for both the company and the city-building strategy genre.
According to Bennemann, the return of The Settlers II to the Amiga serves as a tribute to both the series and the dedicated community that has championed it through the decades.
The Settlers II: Gold Edition is available to pre-order now on the Look Behind You website in three formats: a digital edition (€29.90), standard boxed edition (€49.90), and a collector’s edition priced at €99.90.
Enthusiasts can also experience playable builds on classic 68k and PowerPC Amiga hardware during Gamescom, held in Cologne, Germany from August 20th to 24th, at the Look Behind You booth in the Retro Area.
This return of The Settlers II to Amiga not only honors the beloved legacy of Blue Byte Software but also underscores the enduring enthusiasm of the retro gaming community.
