Bloober Team and Broken Mirror Games have confirmed that ONYX: The Dark Grip is in development for Nintendo Switch 2, with a planned digital release on the Nintendo eShop in 2027.

The collaboration positions the title as a handheld-first horror experience from Bloober Team, the Polish studio known for narrative horror games such as Layers of Fear and The Medium.

According to the developers’ announcement, ONYX: The Dark Grip has been developed specifically for the successor handheld, with gameplay designed to make the console itself an active part of the experience.

The studio describes the player’s role as alternating between two linked perspectives: a vulnerable human host called The Vessel and a supernatural presence referred to as The God.

In a press release, the teams explained that players will alternate roles to survive an isolated town trapped in unending winter.

As The Vessel, players explore a frozen settlement, manage scarce resources, and face environmental dangers and threats concealed under the snow.

When human endurance fails, players assume the role of The God to directly manipulate the world, protect their host and alter outcomes that the human body cannot achieve on its own.

Survival is intended to hinge on knowing when to act in each role.

The developers also detailed platform-specific interactions designed around the Nintendo Switch 2’s handheld features.

Players will be required to touch the screen to move objects within the game world, tilt the console to unleash The God’s power and affect enemies, and use the microphone to perform actions such as warming The Vessel to stave off hypothermia.

The studio framed these controls as making the console “a physical window into another world,” integrating hardware inputs into core gameplay rather than treating the device solely as a display and controller.

Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno framed the project as an extension of the company’s interest in hardware-driven design, saying the team sought to deepen the relationship between player and device by imagining the console as holding another person’s world and building the game around that concept.

ONYX: The Dark Grip will be distributed digitally via the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027.

Further details, including exact release timing, platforms beyond Nintendo Switch 2 and in-depth gameplay footage, are expected from the developers in future updates.
