Balatro, the critically acclaimed poker-inspired roguelike, has seen its age restriction eased in Europe following a successful appeal to reclassify its content.
Previously rated PEGI 18+ due to concerns about its resemblance to real-world gambling, the game will now carry a PEGI 12 rating across the continent.
This decision arrives after public scrutiny and feedback from both the gaming community and industry stakeholders.
Developed by PlayStack and published by Sold Out Sales & Marketing, Balatro blends strategic deck-building mechanics with the structure of poker, offering a unique take on the roguelike genre.
It first launched on the Nintendo Switch as well as other key platforms, rapidly gaining popularity for its innovative gameplay and replay value.
The debate over its original rating centered on fears that teaching poker strategies in-game might encourage underage gambling, an issue that PEGI previously felt warranted strict age gating.
However, following a formal appeal led by the game's publisher, PEGI released an updated statement on its website.
"The PEGI 18 rating for the game 'Balatro' has been changed to a PEGI 12 following a successful appeal submitted by publisher Sold Out Sales & Marketing.
The Complaints Board concluded that, although the game explains various hands of poker, its roguelike deck-building format and imaginative elements justified a lower age rating," the board announced.
The reevaluation brings Balatro's European rating closer in line with its perception in other regions, and sets a new precedent for how deck-building roguelikes with gambling themes may be judged in the future.
Notably, 'Luck be a Landlord,' another game dealing with similar mechanics, has also seen its rating reduced following this change.
As of this writing, Balatro still displays the 18+ rating on the Nintendo Switch eShop, but this update is expected to be reflected soon.
In some cases, the game may be temporarily removed from the eShop during this transition phase.
Balatro's impact on the industry has been substantial since launch.
The title has crossed the milestone of 5 million copies sold and was recently recognized at the DICE Awards, securing three separate honors.
This commercial and critical success is further underlined by glowing reviews, including rare perfect scores from major outlets.
For regular Nintendo Switch users and fans of the roguelike genre, Balatro’s revised rating makes it more accessible to younger audiences, unlocking a new demographic for the popular title.
This move also highlights the importance of accurate age classification in gaming, as well as the willingness of regulatory bodies to reconsider industry feedback.
As the Nintendo Switch eShop prepares to update Balatro's rating, both parents and players can now access the game with greater confidence in its suitability.
