Mouthwashing, the first-person space-horror indie originally released on Steam in 2024, is coming to Nintendo Switch via the Switch eShop on October 29.
Publisher Critical Reflex confirmed the Switch launch during the recent Xbox Showcase, and the port follows the game’s strong commercial performance on PC, where it has sold in excess of 500,000 copies on Steam.
The Switch edition is already listed for pre-order on the North American eShop at a price of $12.99.
At the time of publication the store listing also shows an alternate release date of October 10; Critical Reflex has been contacted for clarification on that discrepancy.
What Mouthwashing is and why it matters
Developed as a psychological horror experience, Mouthwashing places players aboard a stranded space freighter whose crew is slowly dying.
The game’s premise centers on isolation, dwindling supplies and the breakdown of trust among survivors: the ship is described as being out of power in six months, with food rations running out sooner.
Players should expect a tense, narrative-driven atmosphere built around paranoia and gruesome scares rather than action-oriented gameplay.
Critical reception and awards
Mouthwashing received positive critical attention following its 2024 launch, earning Best Narrative and the Players’ Choice trophies at The Horror Game Awards.
The title also secured nominations at The Indie Game Awards and the annual D.I.C.E. Awards, recognition that underlines the game's impact within the indie and horror game communities.
Features highlighted by the publisher
- Descend into Madness: Track the crew’s decline as starvation, isolation and interpersonal strain escalate.
- Immersive Storytelling: The game emphasizes close attention to environmental detail and narrative clues.
- Unforgiving Narrative: The story delivers bleak choices and high-stakes outcomes.
- Psychological Horror: Visual and narrative elements are designed to make players question what they see.
