Peter Calver, Founder of Audiogenic and Brian Lara Cricket Studio, Passes Away

Peter Calver, Founder of Audiogenic and Pioneer Behind Brian Lara Cricket, Passes Away The video game industry is mourning the loss of Peter Calver, a trailblazing figure whose impact on sports video games continues to be felt decades after his innovations.

Calver, best known as the founder of British development studio Audiogenic, passed away following a battle with cancer.

Audiogenic, under Calver’s leadership, became renowned for producing some of the most beloved sports titles in gaming history, including the iconic Brian Lara Cricket series. A Veteran of Home Computer Gaming Peter Calver first entered the software industry by establishing Supersoft in 1978, focusing on both software and hardware for home computers.

In 1985, together with Pearl Wellard, he launched Audiogenic Software Limited, inheriting the assets and reputation of the earlier Audiogenic Limited, which was originally founded by Martin Maynard in 1975 as an audio-focused company.

Calver’s vision transformed Audiogenic into a household name for fans of sports simulations on platforms such as the Amiga, Commodore 64, and PC. Audiogenic’s portfolio included genre-defining classics like Brian Lara Cricket, Emlyn Hughes International Soccer, Graham Gooch's Test Cricket, and World Class Rugby.

The studio’s versatility was also evident in its work outside the sports genre; Audiogenic developed Krusty’s Fun House for Acclaim—an adaptation of its own earlier puzzler, Rat Trap, showcasing the team’s flexibility and design prowess. Recognition and Expansion Audiogenic's expertise in cricket and football titles eventually drew the attention of major publishers.

Through a strategic agreement, Codemasters absorbed the core development team responsible for the Brian Lara Cricket series, furthering the legacy of Audiogenic’s sports titles and marking a pivotal transition in the studio’s history.

Despite its success, Audiogenic ceased new game development in 1997, but its catalog continued to inspire new generations of developers. Industry Leadership and Ongoing Innovation Beyond his work at Audiogenic, Calver played a significant role in shaping the UK gaming industry.

He was a co-founder of the European Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA), which later evolved into the influential trade body Ukie.

His commitment to the industry also extended to innovations outside of gaming; in 2004, Calver founded Lost Cousins, a pioneering genealogy service that connects distant relatives through shared ancestry. Reflecting on his departure from the games industry in a 2015 interview, Calver noted, "I left the industry as it became difficult for smaller publishers to keep pace with rising costs and pressures.

While I don't miss the sleepless nights spent worrying about financial burdens, I greatly miss the creativity and camaraderie of my colleagues.

Though I never realized all my design ambitions—like our planned football game featuring Sir Stanley Matthews—I never stopped generating new ideas, some of which I have brought to life." Peter Calver's legacy endures through the games and organizations he helped create, influencing the landscape of sports simulations and developer communities.

The thoughts of the global gaming community are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
