Mario Kart World Devs Reveal Innovations and Expansive Features for Nintendo Switch 2 Launch With the upcoming release of Mario Kart™ World for the Nintendo Switch™ 2 on June 5, the iconic franchise is set to make a major leap in design, content, and gameplay.

Nintendo’s latest entry not only introduces new high-speed racing experiences, but also celebrates creativity and technical ambition as revealed in a recent developer interview in the company’s ongoing "Ask the Developer" series. An Interconnected World – More Than Just Racing During the development of Mario Kart World, the design team envisioned a vibrant, interconnected universe far beyond traditional racing tracks.

According to lead designer Yoshitaka Ishikawa, designers crafted a wealth of concept art showcasing characters in everyday scenes—eating, exploring, and sporting attire inspired by diverse landscapes.

"We imagined a vast, living world, so a lot of our concept art reflected people’s daily lives in this universe," Ishikawa explained.

The focus on world-building led to detailed costumes and vehicles designed as cohesive sets, introducing a poster-like visual style. Food, Transformations, and Unique Locales One defining feature in Mario Kart World is the presence of "Yoshi’s," a fictional drive-thru chain scattered throughout the in-game world, with menus and themes reflecting regional cultures.

As gameplay director Kosuke Yabuki shared, the fun idea of characters eating local foods evolved into a transformative aspect of gameplay.

"Early in development, we explored if consuming food could enable characters to change outfits or even transform, tying local cuisine directly to in-game customization," he stated.

The team confirmed with veteran producer Takashi Tezuka that "Mario does in fact eat mushrooms," solidifying the logic behind food-driven power-ups. Expanding the Playable Cast and Vehicles Mario Kart World adds a twist to character selection, welcoming fan-favorite background elements like Cow, Cheep Cheep, and Pokey as racers.

Ishikawa highlighted, "After playtesting, we found even traditionally non-playable characters fit seamlessly on the track.

It opened up new creative ground for the series." The introduction of so-called "NPC drivers"—formerly course obstacles now fully integrated as racers—required careful voice and animation work to preserve personality and bring fresh charm. Innovation in Environments and Physics Engineers and artists also focused heavily on water-based racing.

Shintaro Sato, programming lead, detailed how the team enhanced water graphics, adding dynamic waves, whitecaps, and interactive elements reminiscent of Wave Race 64.

"We made sure waves react to the environment and racer movement, even letting players jump over them for strategic gameplay advantages," Sato said.

Visual lead Jikumaru noted, "It was important for players to perceive the crest of a wave for timing jumps, so we worked intensely on dynamic whitecap effects." Attention to detail extended to vehicle handling—cars now feature suspension with dynamic tire movement reflecting the world’s varied terrain.

Players will not just race on asphalt, but traverse rough off-road paths and glide across water.

As Ishikawa described, "We wanted the player to enjoy a true sense of place across varied environments, from crystal-clear shoals to volcanic regions with terrain-appropriate vehicles." Technical and Audio Excellence Audio creative director Asahi described the substantial effort put into making every detail sound authentic, especially when driving on different surfaces.

"We captured minute changes—from the bobbing of a kart on water to unique vehicle engines—so players experience a rich sonic landscape," he shared.

The result is a Mario Kart entry where every sensory aspect supports immersion and gameplay satisfaction. Mario Kart World launches globally on Nintendo Switch 2 and will be available on the Nintendo eShop starting June 5, expanding the legacy of one of Nintendo’s most beloved franchises with fresh innovation and cross-generational appeal.
