Nintendo has a storied history of innovation, but with the release of Mario Kart World—debuting globally alongside the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 on Thursday, June 5—the iconic developer is raising the bar for its acclaimed racing franchise.

Mario Kart World, the first original home console installment in the beloved series in nearly eight years, introduces groundbreaking features that transform traditional circuit-based kart racing into an expansive, seamlessly interconnected world.

In an exclusive interview for Nintendo's "Ask the Developer" series, the creative leads behind Mario Kart World—including longtime series producer Kosuke Yabuki, programming director Kenta Sato, art director Masaaki Ishikawa, planning lead Shintaro Jikumaru, and sound director Atsuko Asahi—offered a rare look into the development process and design philosophy that fueled the game's evolution on Nintendo Switch 2 hardware. Producer Kosuke Yabuki, who has guided the series since Mario Kart Wii and directed both Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart 8, explained, "Mario Kart World marks a bold new direction for the series.

Instead of focusing on separate, stand-alone courses, we’ve built a massive world where courses are interconnected by roads, letting players freely explore, race in real-time Knockout Tour competitions, and experience environmental variations like shifting weather and day-night cycles." The driving force behind this radical departure was a sense of completion with the previous formula perfected in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Yabuki shared that ideation began even during the final stages of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's development, with formal prototyping starting in March 2017.

"We realized the technology now allowed us to connect races seamlessly across a single, vast world, which became the unique vision for Mario Kart World." The increased ambition raised significant technical and creative challenges.

Sato, the programming director and a veteran of the Mario Kart and Wii Sports series, recalled, "From the outset, we knew accommodating up to 24-player races—double the previous maximum—would require a total overhaul of our programming systems.

Frame rate integrity and the split-screen multiplayer experience remained non-negotiable, which demanded rigorous optimizations right from the start." Art director Ishikawa echoed the excitement and difficulty of the new approach.

Having previously led visual design on Mario Kart 8 and ARMS, he explained, "This time, the visual direction shifted toward a sense of adventure and playfulness.

We revisited the charming, rounded styles from the original Super Mario Kart, integrating bustling atmospheres and lively character interactions that evoke a world teeming with energy." Jikumaru, who guided the gameplay design, highlighted the need for balance: "While introducing new mechanics like Wall Ride and Rail Ride, we wanted to ensure gameplay remained satisfying for longstanding fans, incorporating the best elements from previous titles while keeping the controls approachable." For audio, Asahi described her challenge: "Sound design had to adapt to a larger, connected world.

Dynamic transitions were essential so players staying on different routes and at different speeds would always have a seamless audio experience.

We incorporated more live instruments, such as a powerful harmonica, to enhance the soundtrack’s sense of playfulness and match the game’s energetic atmosphere." When discussing the increased player count, Yabuki reflected, "We decided early on to double the number of racers to 24, ensuring the world never feels empty and that players always experience competitive interaction across sprawling courses." Sato emphasized the hurdles: "Optimizing for 24 players demanded sacrifices, but once Nintendo Switch 2's enhanced hardware became viable, it opened the door to achieving our big ambitions without compromise." Mario Kart World launches globally June 5, 2024, exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2, promising both seasoned fans and newcomers an exhilarating new driving adventure that redefines what a Mario Kart game can be.

With years of expertise, a veteran development team, and cutting-edge hardware, Nintendo signals the future of kart racing with the most robust, connected, and lively entry in the franchise to date.
