Electronic Arts (EA) and Respawn Entertainment have officially announced that Apex Legends will be shutting down on the Nintendo Switch platform in 2026.
The popular free-to-play battle royale, which has been available on Switch since March 2021, will no longer be accessible to players on the original console starting August 4, 2026.
This decision marks a significant change for players who have enjoyed Apex Legends on Nintendo’s hybrid handheld since its eShop debut. According to the statement released today by EA and Respawn, Season 30 will be the final playable season for Apex Legends on Nintendo Switch.
Players can continue to join matches, earn seasonal rewards, and purchase premium currency as usual until the cutoff date.
However, beginning August 4, 2026, in-game premium currency purchases will be disabled on Nintendo Switch.
Existing balances may still be used up until the shutdown, and importantly, any outstanding digital currency can be transferred to Nintendo Switch 2. Crucially, EA clarified that player accounts and all associated content—including Apex Coins, cosmetics, and progression—are connected to each individual's EA account.
This means everything earned or purchased on Apex Legends for Nintendo Switch will carry over seamlessly to Nintendo Switch 2.
Even if players upgrade to the newer hardware after August 4, 2026, their progress and purchases will be intact, provided they log in with the same EA account.
This approach ensures that the transition to the next generation is as frictionless as possible for the global player base.
However, the company advised players in certain regions to be mindful of local laws, which may require the use of digital currency within 180 days of purchase. Respawn Entertainment reiterated that these changes exclusively affect the original Nintendo Switch version of Apex Legends.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version will remain fully operational, with no announced plans to discontinue service on the next-generation platform.
This move underscores EA’s commitment to supporting Apex Legends on modern Nintendo hardware, aligning with evolving technology and player expectations. Since its launch, Apex Legends has been a major title on Nintendo Switch, bringing the acclaimed battle royale experience to a broader audience via the eShop and supporting robust cross-progression features.
EA and Respawn have thanked the community for their support, ensuring that fans can continue squad-based action on Nintendo’s next-generation console for the foreseeable future. For more information on ongoing service updates and upcoming releases, keep an eye on official Nintendo Direct presentations and Respawn Entertainment announcements.
