Description

Killer7, Capcom and Grasshopper Manufacture’s iconic action-adventure game, marks its 20th anniversary this year.

Originally released in Japan on June 9, 2005, for the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube, Killer7 was a pivotal project for director and writer Goichi "Suda51" Suda.

The game’s groundbreaking international release signaled the global arrival of Suda51, who would go on to become one of Japan’s most celebrated game creators. Killer7 follows the enigmatic group of assassins known as the Smith Syndicate, who, under the command of their wheelchair-bound leader Harman Smith, undertake covert missions for the U.S.

government.

The game was developed by Grasshopper Manufacture with Capcom serving as publisher, a collaboration that delivered a blend of first-person shooter mechanics and on-rails action rarely seen at the time.

Notable for its unconventional plot structure and distinct art direction, Killer7 challenged players with a layered, surrealist narrative and minimalist, stylized visuals. At launch, Killer7 received a mixed critical reception.

Reviewers cited the complex storyline and unorthodox gameplay as barriers for mainstream audiences, and its intentionally subdued aesthetic drew polarized opinions.

The now-famous line, "I went to see the devil, now it’s your turn!" encapsulated the game’s unapologetically strange sensibility, as summarized by critics who noted the game’s willingness to push the boundaries of interactive storytelling.

Despite the rocky start, Killer7 gradually accrued a cult following and is now revered as a classic of Japanese game design, often credited for paving the way for more experimental projects within the industry. In 2018, Killer7 was ported to PC, exposing a new generation of gamers to its unique blend of action, narrative experimentation, and visual flair.

Suda51’s impact has only grown since, with hit titles such as No More Heroes, Lollipop Chainsaw, Shadows Of The Damned, and Killer Is Dead further cementing his reputation for bold creative vision.

Looking ahead, his highly anticipated games Hotel Barcelona and Romeo Is a Dead Man are set to launch in 2025 and 2026, respectively. With two decades since its debut, Killer7 remains a testament to Capcom and Grasshopper Manufacture’s willingness to take risks—and to Suda51’s enduring influence on the evolution of narrative-driven, stylistically daring video games on platforms like the PS2 and Nintendo GameCube.
