Nintendo, a company long associated with vibrant physical releases and collector’s editions, is reportedly accelerating its shift toward digital-first strategies with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2.

This development, highlighted by Circana analyst Mat Piscatella during a recent discussion with the Spawn Wave YouTube channel, reflects wider industry trends, including similar moves from major competitors such as Sony and Microsoft. Historically, Nintendo has maintained a strong presence in physical retail, capitalizing on regional demands and the enduring popularity of tangible game collections.

However, data now reveals a growing digital adoption among Switch users, echoing broader shifts throughout the gaming sector.

Piscatella addressed these dynamics directly, noting the notable evolution in consumer behavior: "Although there's a dedicated audience that still prefers buying physical copies, the market share for digital sales is increasing—and this change is becoming more evident with Nintendo's latest Switch model," Piscatella explained.

"We see the transition moving faster, even for Nintendo, as more players opt for digital purchases." Piscatella also compared this progression to Nintendo’s competitors, emphasizing the rapid digitalization of the industry at large.

He commented on Microsoft's potential trajectory by stating he does not expect the next Xbox to include a disc drive.

Regarding Sony, Piscatella pointed out that adoption rates for PlayStation's disc drive accessory indicate uncertainty about the future balance between physical and digital formats: "In some regions, physical games still hold significant importance, but overall, we're moving toward a digital future." Although no official figures specify whether digital sales have surpassed physical on the Switch 2, some sales milestones provide insight into this transformation.

Mario Kart World, for instance, has sold over six million units since release—a stat that likely includes substantial digital purchases based on observed market trends.

Meanwhile, overall physical sales on Nintendo platforms have experienced a modest decline, further underscoring the rising prominence of digital sales through the eShop and digital storefronts. Despite these signals, Piscatella does not foresee an immediate, wholesale abandonment of physical media.

He argues that Nintendo's legacy of catering to retail markets and offering special physical editions will keep tangible game releases relevant for the foreseeable future.

However, the Nintendo Switch 2 is positioned as a potential catalyst—accelerating Nintendo's pivot toward prioritizing digital distribution as a primary model.
