Description

SegaMags, a familiar presence at retro gaming events across the UK, is embarking on a strategic rebranding to mark a new phase in its nearly decade-long history.

Founded by Marc Jowett, SegaMags initially began as an online tribute to classic video game magazines, before evolving into a well-respected reseller of these publications and related items, including highly sought-after books from industry publishers like Bitmap Books. Marc Jowett, who runs the operation alongside his partner Jess, has made a significant announcement regarding the future of SegaMags.

Sharing updates with the community, Jowett reflected on the decision behind the change, noting the emotional weight of moving forward.

Jowett expressed on social media that despite his success with SegaMags at UK events over nearly ten years, he is saddened to see the brand step back from the events circuit.

He stated that this shift is necessary, emphasizing the importance of updating the brand’s image to better align with what the business has become—a leading seller of classic gaming books and magazines. "After almost a decade of showcasing SegaMags at UK events, it’s difficult to see the brand’s familiar face leave the circuit," Jowett observed.

"However, the time has come.

Our business continues to grow, and it’s crucial that our branding accurately represents our evolving focus and offerings." The transition will see The Gaming Newsagent take center stage as the primary identity for the resale business, with a sharper focus on curating and distributing classic magazines and archival publications.

Meanwhile, SegaMags will return to its roots, serving as a passion project dedicated to collecting and displaying UK Sega magazines, much as it did during its inception.

Jowett believes this reorganization will "cement [his] position as the leading seller of books and magazines on the event circuit," while also offering clearer messaging to the community and clientele. Importantly, the SegaMags brand itself will not disappear entirely.

Instead, it will narrow its spotlight onto the world of UK gaming magazines and the specific community of collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate them.

The dual approach—SegaMags centering on magazine archiving and The Gaming Newsagent focusing on retail and event presence—aims to provide both dedicated collectors and casual fans with a more tailored and recognizably branded experience. As the UK’s retro gaming scene continues to thrive through events, online communities, and publications, these changes signal a new era for SegaMags and The Gaming Newsagent.

Fans and collectors can look forward to expertly curated selections, deeper archival content, and a refreshed presence at gaming conventions and events—a testament to Jowett’s enduring passion and commitment to the retro gaming magazine legacy.
