Description

A passionate community effort is underway to make "Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand" for the PlayStation 2 accessible to English-speaking players for the first time.

Originally developed by Arc System Works and Taito, this action RPG is a 2006 remake of the classic 1995 Super Famicom game by renowned studio Nihon Falcom.

While the Ys series enjoys an international fanbase and numerous localized releases, several entries—most notably this specific remake—have remained Japan-exclusive, creating high demand among dedicated enthusiasts. The new fan translation initiative is being spearheaded by KaisaanSiddiqui, a well-known figure in the translation community who previously led the English patch project for Telenet Japan's MSX classic "Digital Devil Monogatari: Megami Tensei" in early 2024.

Over the weekend, KaisaanSiddiqui publicly disclosed plans via Twitter/X to create an English patch for the "Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand" PS2 remake, collaborating with other fans and recruiting assistance from the community. Released in 2006, the PlayStation 2 version offered significant improvements and revisions over the Super Famicom original, including enhanced graphics, a modernized combat system, and an expanded narrative.

This title followed similar remakes of "Ys III" and "Ys IV: Mask of the Sun" for Sony's popular console, as Arc System Works and Taito sought to rejuvenate Nihon Falcom's celebrated RPG franchise for a new generation of players. The story of "Ys V" centers on series protagonist Adol Christin, whose quest leads him to uncover the mysteries behind the legendary desert city of Kefin.

While the original Super Famicom release was translated by the group Aeon Genesis back in 2013, the PlayStation 2 remake has never received an official or unofficial English translation—until now. According to KaisaanSiddiqui, updates on the progress of the translation project will be provided via Github and Twitter/X, alongside a dedicated Discord community where interested contributors and fans can join the conversation, offer support, or seek further information from the developer. This promising fan-driven localization effort aims to shine a spotlight on a pivotal chapter of the Ys series, and its development is eagerly anticipated by RPG aficionados worldwide.

The project not only demonstrates the ongoing passion and dedication within the retro gaming scene but also highlights the enduring appeal of Japan-exclusive titles waiting to be discovered by future audiences.
