Perfect Dark VR Port in Experimental Development for Meta Quest

A promising new project is bringing Rare’s legendary Nintendo 64 shooter Perfect Dark into virtual reality.

Currently in its experimental stages, this standalone VR port is being developed specifically for the Meta Quest platform.

The project, spearheaded by developer Alex Le Tux, leverages a 2022 decompilation of the original game, laying the groundwork for an authentic VR adaptation. First released in 2000, Perfect Dark quickly established itself as a milestone in the first-person shooter genre and built a devoted fan following thanks to its innovative gameplay and technical achievements on the Nintendo 64 hardware.

While the title has been re-released on platforms such as the Xbox 360—and, more recently, revisited via legacy content on modern hardware—the arrival of a VR port is a significant development for fans seeking a fresh perspective on Joanna Dark’s missions. Alex Le Tux shared the first look at the VR adaptation through a gameplay demonstration on YouTube.

The footage showcases the player navigating the iconic opening level, 'dataDyne: Defection,' with headtracking and motion-controlled aiming fully implemented.

According to the developer, this standalone application is currently not ready for public release, with its 'experimental' status emphasized in the preview's description. Community VR specialist Flat2VR highlighted that the project builds off the detailed decompilation undertaken by the fan community in 2022, enabling a more accurate and customizable porting process.

The hands-on demo displayed significant progress in replicating the original Perfect Dark experience in a fully immersive environment, tapping into advanced VR controls and hardware features unique to Meta Quest. This is not the first attempt by the fanbase to translate Perfect Dark into VR.

Enthusiasts previously developed a mod for the VR shooter Pavlov Shack, integrating several of the classic title’s maps—including the popular 'Extraction' level—for multiplayer experiences.

However, the current standalone Meta Quest project aims to surpass previous efforts by offering greater fidelity to the source material and the flexibility to introduce additional VR-focused features in the future. As development continues, the VR port of Perfect Dark exemplifies the lasting influence and passion surrounding Rare’s celebrated shooter, even decades after its Nintendo 64 debut.

While a public launch date has not been announced, the commitment of the community and developers like Alex Le Tux ensures that this project will remain a significant point of interest for retro and VR gaming circles alike.
