Taki Udon, renowned in the modding community for his innovative Nintendo Switch upgrades, has once again pushed the boundaries of handheld gaming hardware.
Building on the acclaim of the Super5 OLED screen mod—which brought a high-contrast, vivid OLED display to the original Nintendo Switch Lite—Udon has now unveiled the Super5 OLED HDMI mod.
This revolutionary enhancement empowers Switch Lite users with HDMI-out connectivity, a long-requested feature previously absent from Nintendo’s compact handheld.
Since its launch in 2019, the Nintendo Switch Lite has solidified its place as a versatile, portable option for gaming on the go.
However, its lack of external display support remained a sore point for players seeking flexible gameplay experiences.
Addressing this gap, Taki Udon embarked on a prolonged research and development journey to create a seamless HDMI-out solution for the Switch Lite.
According to Taki Udon, completing this project was an immense technical and personal challenge.
In a statement shared on social media, he summarized the ordeal: the Super5 OLED HDMI required 18 months of extensive research and development, with as many failed hardware revisions.
The costs exceeded $200,000, and Udon described the process as "the most demanding work" of his career.
He expressed deep relief upon seeing the fully assembled device functioning correctly at last.
Reflecting on the arduous path to launch, Taki Udon revealed that each unsuccessful iteration caused significant frustration and fatigue.
He explained that after experiencing multiple setbacks, every new attempt was met with cautious optimism, only to result in further delays whenever a build failed.
"After each failed revision, I hoped the next would be successful, but often faced another two-week minimum wait to try again," he explained.
The completed Super5 OLED HDMI mod now enables Nintendo Switch Lite owners to instantly transfer gameplay visuals to an external monitor.
When connected, the handheld’s internal display turns off and seamlessly redirects output to the connected screen.
However, Udon noted that simultaneous dual-screen output was not feasible due to signal stability limitations encountered during development.
Despite the engineering achievement, Taki Udon acknowledged that the project is unlikely to recoup its significant financial outlay and development time.
After repeated setbacks, he shifted focus from profit to simply seeing the project through to completion.
Udon has built a reputation for advancing the possibilities of retro and modern gaming hardware, with prior projects such as the MiSTer Pi and work ongoing on the SuperStation system.
Looking ahead, Taki Udon intends to continue innovating with plans to develop an OLED mod for the anticipated Switch 2, further expanding the modding landscape for Nintendo devices.
The Super5 OLED HDMI mod stands as a testament to dedication and the spirit of hardware modification, providing the Nintendo Switch Lite community with enhanced versatility and longevity.
